Our story
After many years of secondary school teaching, Chris and Andrea McCallum decided to learn something new themselves, and planted a small olive grove in Devon North. The locals in this traditional dairying district of Gippsland were very interested in the venture, but sceptical of how successful olive growing would be in this part of the world.
The first planting in 1998 included Corregiola, Frantoio, Hardy’s Mammoth and Manzanillo. More Corregiola, Frantoio, Hardy’s Mammoth and Jumbo Kalamata trees followed in 2000 and 2002. Research into successful varieties in Northern Italy led to Corregiola and Frantoio being chosen as the grove’s primary olives.
The railway track at the top of the Devon Siding logo is a nod to the railway that once ran through the property from Yarram to the historic timber-cutting settlement in the Mullungdung forest.
Devon Siding is proud to be a founding member of Southern Gippsland Olives, a partnership between six local olive groves.
From tree to bottle
Our olives are hand-picked in May and June by family and friends, with lunch for the pickers laid on by Andrea.
The fruit is pressed locally within the Southern Gippsland Olives association.
Back at Devon Siding, Chris and Andrea let the oil settle before filtering, bottling, capping and labelling it themselves.
The new season’s oil is usually available from July each year, from our stockists or direct from us.
Where to buy
Our extra virgin olive oil is typically available from July each year at these outlets, or direct from the grove.
